Minecraft Experience at Westfield Donau Zentrum: four days of photo booth fun in a Vienna mall

In late May 2026, Westfield Donau Zentrum became an outpost of a very different world for four days: the Minecraft Experience was promoting its new interactive exhibition “Villager Rescue”, opening in October 2026 at Metastadt in Vienna. Right in the middle of it stood our Fotobox Classic photo booth – in front of a large Minecraft-themed photo wall, directly beneath the glass dome in the mall's atrium.
The brief: a promotion, not a party
Most photo booth bookings happen in the evening – at corporate parties, weddings or balls, with guests who came to celebrate anyway. This activation was different. From 27 to 30 May, the photo booth ran for around eight hours a day in the middle of regular shopping hours. The people walking by had no plans to take a photo. They were shopping, heading to lunch or out with their kids.
That is exactly what the photo booth was there for: an easy first touchpoint with the exhibition. A quick photo in front of the Minecraft backdrop, a print to take home – and a reminder of the exhibition that still hangs on the fridge months later. An on-site promotion team ran the stand, approaching passers-by and inviting them over to the photo wall.
One photo instead of three funny faces
At parties, we usually print photo strips with three or four shots. Here it was clear from the start that this would not work: nobody in a shopping mall stops to strike three different poses. The request was a single photo in 10x15 format with a large branded frame. That gives the exhibition artwork as much space as possible while keeping the photo itself at the centre.
We prepared dedicated Photoshop templates with a single photo in advance – in portrait and landscape, with square and rectangular crops. The Minecraft-themed print layout was then designed on the client side and loaded into the photo booth by us.
Four days in a shopping mall: what matters
A multi-day booking in a shopping mall comes with different requirements than one evening at an event venue. We sorted out three points together in advance:
- Stability: We set up the photo booth on our heavy base – internally we affectionately call this version the “tank”. It stays put, even when kids lean against it or it gets busy around it.
- Overnight: The photo booth stayed on site after closing time. We recommended cordoning off the area with stanchions; sensitive parts like the printer can be taken away overnight and reconnected in the morning if needed.
- Time windows: Setup took place on the first morning before the mall opened, teardown shortly before closing on the last day. For the Fotobox Classic, around 30 minutes is enough for each.
The result: 1,486 photos in four days
Over the four days, 1,486 photos were taken – as prints to take home and digitally as well. For a promotion where nobody came specifically for the photo booth, that is a strong number. Families, teenagers and Minecraft fans took home a souvenir photo featuring the exhibition artwork.
After the activation, we handed over all digital photos so they could be used for further communication around the exhibition. The feedback after the four days was very positive – and the Minecraft campaign continued in summer: at the Spielefest at Austria Center Vienna, the photo booth was back in action.
Why the Fotobox Classic was the right fit
For shopping malls we often recommend our largest Mirror Photo Booth, the AI Magic Tower, because its height makes it visible across the whole mall. For this activation, the Fotobox Classic was still the right choice:
- Fast: Shoot, flash, print in a few seconds – essential when people only stop for a moment.
- Classic instead of AI: The goal was a real photo in front of the backdrop, not an AI transformation. If that is what you are after, the AI Fotobox offers AI effects.
- Compact: The photo booth needs roughly two by two metres, so it fits neatly in front of a photo wall without blocking the walkway.
- Image quality: A DSLR camera and studio flash deliver clean, evenly lit photos – even under the mixed light of a mall atrium.
Photo booths for promotions and brand activations
The Minecraft Experience shows how well a photo booth works beyond classic celebrations: at mall promotions, exhibition launches, trade fair stands or sampling campaigns. The photo becomes a giveaway people are happy to take home – with your branding on it.
